Student Story – Childcare Case Study – Lynton House Day Nursery

AC started working at Lynton House Day Nursery in Epsom in May 2015. She left school with no GCSE’s after being diagnosed with Leukaemia aged 15 and spending long periods in hospital whilst undergoing chemotherapy.

She started her CYPW level 2 apprenticeship, but it soon became apparent that she was struggling to deal with a new role, a new qualification and the pain and discomfort that she experiences in her joints as a consequence of her illness, so we agreed to stop her apprenticeship for now, but she continued to work at the nursery as an unqualified Nursery Nurse, to build up her confidence and occupational competency.

AC approached me in January 2017 and said she now felt ready to start her qualification again. Her confidence, knowledge and skills has grown immensely during that time, and she was now a very capable and determined young lady, and approached her qualification with enthusiasm and determination. Not only did she have to manage the assignments for her vocational qualification, but also all three functional skills.

AC completed her CYPW level 2 apprenticeship and has immediately progressing onto the Children’s Learning & Development (EYE) Level 3 Apprenticeship, still being supported at Lynton House.

Apprenticeship programmes are a combination of practical assessment in the workplace and college-based learning. You will be employed as an apprentice within your chosen field and attend Sutton & District Training for workshops and off-the-job training on a regular basis. Apprenticeships are for 16-19 year olds.
