ESOL Skills for Life English

Our ESOL course is suitable for young people who are new to the country or who have been living in the UK for a short while for whom English is a second or additional language.

ESOL Skills for Life qualifications support speakers of other languages based within the UK to develop their English language skills for work, further learning or everyday life.

These qualifications are intended for anyone based in the UK needing to improve their understanding and use of written or spoken English. This might be to help get on at work (or get a job), prepare for further study, access public services, or to function more effectively in an English-speaking environment.

It includes ‘single-mode’ Awards in Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening, as well as a ‘full-mode’ Certificate that combines all three. This qualification is available from entry level 1 to level 2.

Enrichment activities encourage our students to learn more about the UK through visits to places of interest such as museums and well known UK landmarks. Cultural walks and trips to the coast and the country are also well received. Sporting and performing arts activities help build confidence, team work skills and encourage an interest and participation in the local community.

Functional Skills Maths & ICT

Our Functional Skills qualifications in Mathematics enable learners to apply numeracy and practical mathematical skills in both their personal and professional lives. Functional Skills equips learners with the fundamental applied skills needed to succeed in all aspects of life, work and other learning.

Qualification level

Functional Skills Mathematics qualifications are available at all five levels: Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2.

ESOL Student Stories 2020

“I came to England from Sudan in September 2018. I spoke just a little English. SDT was very friendly and the teachers spent lots of time helping us.

The small classes were good. I want to go into construction so SDT arranged for me to help some builders to see if I liked it. That was good. I got Entry 2 in Skills for Life, maths, ICT and Employability. I am now at Merton College on an Entry 3 ESOL course.”

“I came to England in December 2018. I could not get into big college because the courses had started and I could not speak English. I am from Eritrea.

I started at SDT. Everyone made me feel wanted. It was so friendly. The teachers were helpful and just kept showing us until we got things right.

I got Entry 2 qualifications and I am now at Merton College doing Entry 3.

When I finish my education I will go to Switzerland to become a Refrigeration Technician.

SDT gave me a really good base to build on so I could move on.”
